When to go, how to get there and what to bring for warm waters among the corals at low tide.
At low tide, the reefs of the Coral Coast form warm, clear pools just meters from the sand. This is Japaratinga’s most popular outing — and the one that takes the most planning.
When to go
The secret is the tide. The lower it is, the shallower and clearer the pools become. The best tides tend to fall around the full and new moon, when the difference between high and low tide is greatest.
How to get there
Trips go out on jangadas, traditional sailing rafts steered by local boatmen, or by catamaran — the hotel arranges catamaran trips to the natural pools. Our reception team can help you choose the best time based on the day’s tide.
What to bring
- Reef-friendly sunscreen
- A diving mask or snorkel
- Neoprene water shoes for walking on the reefs
- Water and a hat
- A waterproof bag for your phone
Looking after the coral
Japaratinga lies within the Costa dos Corais Environmental Protection Area. Avoid stepping on the reefs, do not feed the fish and take all your trash back with you. That way, others can enjoy the sea just as you did.
